3 Young Nigerians win 4 gold medals at Rome STEM Olympiad

Three young Nigerians have won four gold medals at the 2026 International STEM Olympiad in Rome, competing against students from over 150 countries at the Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma.

Don Anele Munachimso Marvellous, 17, from Diamond Special College, Owerri, won gold in both mathematics and science, making him the world’s best in the science category. Chimdiebube Onwubiko, 13, a junior secondary student at Evergreen Schools, Enugu, took gold in mathematics.

And Egejurum Onyedikachi Ethan, just 11 and in Primary 6, won gold in the primary mathematics category, becoming the world’s top primary school mathematician at the competition.

All three qualified after excelling at the Southeast Mathematics Olympiad, which drew more than 11,500 participants across five Southeast states.

Education advocate Alex Onyia, CEO of Educare, personally sponsored their entire trip, including flights, visas and accommodation.

The victory carries added weight after Nigeria was recently downgraded to observer status at the International Mathematical Olympiad in Shanghai due to funding shortfalls, renewing calls for greater investment in the country’s gifted and STEM education programmes.
