Nigeria’s Senate has called on the Federal Government to end its policy of rehabilitating and reintegrating former Boko Haram members, insisting that captured terrorists and bandits be prosecuted instead.
The resolution followed a motion by Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua on escalating attacks on military personnel, listing six abductions or killings of serving and retired officers since 2023, including retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, kidnapped and killed in captivity in Katsina State in May.
Senators Joseph Ikpea and Adams Oshiomhole led calls to scrap the rehabilitation programme, calling it a reward for criminality, citing its cost and risks. The Senate also resolved to meet President Tinubu directly over worsening insecurity and urged faster deployment of drones, surveillance and intelligence technology.
Separately, the Nigerian Army announced that two senior terrorist commanders, described as “Munzirs” within the group’s leadership, surrendered to troops in Geidam, Borno State, on July 4. Officials say they’re now in custody providing intelligence on the group’s operations, command structure and logistics, a move the military called another blow to the insurgency.
