UNRWA Faces Shutdown as Israel Defies International Pressure

The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, faces imminent closure in Israeli-controlled areas, including Gaza, as Israel enforces a ban despite widespread international opposition.

Israel’s High Court of Justice declined a last-minute appeal to halt the decision, effectively sealing UNRWA’s fate. The agency warns the move will cripple humanitarian efforts and hinder Gaza’s recovery.

Palestinians in the war-ravaged Gaza Strip and the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, are expected to suffer most, alongside 30,000 UNRWA staff facing job losses.

Israel’s decision comes amid strong condemnation from aid organisations and key allies, including UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who labelled UNRWA “irreplaceable” and urged Israel to reverse course.

Since the conflict escalated following Hamas’s 7 October attack, UNRWA has delivered 60% of Gaza’s food aid. Its forced closure raises fresh concerns over worsening humanitarian conditions in the region.
