Israel and Lebanon begin ceasefire, Trump says Iran may meet US at weekend

A 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has taken effect, bringing a temporary pause to hostilities after weeks of escalating conflict in the region. Reports from Beirut indicated celebratory gunfire as the truce began, although there were also claims of isolated Israeli shelling and continued operations targeting Hezbollah positions.

United States President Donald Trump has said a new round of talks between Washington and Iran could take place over the weekend, raising hopes of progress toward ending wider regional tensions. Speaking at the White House, President Trump said discussions with Iran were advancing and suggested a potential breakthrough on long-standing nuclear concerns.

President Trump also stated that Iran had indicated it would not pursue nuclear weapons for more than two decades, describing it as a possible step toward agreement. He noted that Iran’s nuclear programme remains a key issue in negotiations, following previous discussions held in Islamabad.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts continue as the United States seeks broader regional stability, including potential talks involving Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun.

Reports indicate that Iran is considering a limited compromise on its enriched uranium stockpile, while still demanding United Nations guarantees and a permanent ceasefire before any reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
