Israel Intercepts Gaza-Bound Aid Ship Carrying Greta Thunberg

Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, has praised the military for what he described as a ‘quick and safe’ interception of the ‘Madleen’, an aid vessel bound for Gaza.

The ship, carrying climate activist Greta Thunberg and French Member of the European Parliament, Rima Hassan, among others, was redirected to the Israeli port of Ashdod. Katz confirmed that passengers would be shown footage of the 7 October Hamas-led attack, which claimed over 1,200 lives, according to Israeli sources.

The minister accused the activists of supporting Hamas and said it was important they “understand the atrocities committed” against Israeli civilians, including women, children, and the elderly.

The bombardment of Gaza erupted following the October 7, 2023 assault by Hamas on Israel. Since then, Gaza’s health authorities report that over 54,000 Palestinians have died in Israeli air and ground operations.

The interception of the ‘Madleen’ adds a new dimension to international efforts to deliver aid to Gaza amidst tightening Israeli controls.
