Nigerian singer Temilade Openiyi, professionally known as Tems, has etched her name in history as the first female African artist to have a song surpass one billion streams on Spotify.
The milestone comes courtesy of ‘Wait For U’, her 2022 collaboration with American rappers Future and Drake. The track, which samples Tems’ song ‘Higher’ from her debut extended play ‘For Broken Ears’, was an instant success, debuting at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. This achievement made Tems the first African artist to debut atop the prestigious chart.
