The United States has engaged in direct discussions with Hamas concerning American hostages held in Gaza, the White House has confirmed.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Israel had been consulted ahead of the talks.

The discussions were first reported by Axios, a US-based news organisation, which suggested negotiations had covered both the release of US hostages and a broader agreement to end the conflict.
Leavitt also stated that the US special envoy for hostages, Adam Boehler, was leading efforts in what she described as a ‘good faith effort to do what’s right for the American people.’
