Nigeria’s food import bill rose sharply in the second quarter of 2025, increasing by 33 percent compared to the same period last year. Data from the National Bureau of Statistics shows food imports hit ₦1.18 trillion between April and June, up from ₦893 billion in 2024.
On a quarterly basis, the rise was 13 percent from the first quarter of 2025. Overall, Nigeria spent ₦15.2 trillion on imports in Q2, with food accounting for 8 percent. China remained the country’s leading trading partner, accounting for a third of total imports, followed by the United States.

Key imports included palm oil, cocoa powder, fish, margarine, and large volumes of wheat from Canada and Russia. Agricultural exports stood at ₦1.25 trillion, a year-on-year increase, though lower than the previous quarter. The figures underline Nigeria’s continued dependence on foreign food supplies.
