300,000 people displaced in France wildfires

Wildfires raging across southwestern France and Spain have forced more than 300,000 people to evacuate, as record heatwaves fuel blazes described by French officials as unprecedented.

Near Bordeaux, the Gironde fire has grown so intense it’s generating its own winds, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said, calling evacuation orders non-negotiable. President Macron has deployed 1,000 soldiers and an experimental A400M military aircraft capable of dropping 20 tons of fire retardant.

In Spain, which has declared a national emergency, two fires near Madrid are merging along a 14-15 kilometre strip, with 2,737 personnel and crews from Greece, Italy and Portugal battling the flames. At least one death has been confirmed in Valencia. France has appealed for international assistance as temperatures threaten to reach 42°C by Wednesday.
