Gaza Faces Years of Division Between Israeli and Hamas Control

A de facto partition of Gaza between Israeli-controlled areas and those ruled by Hamas appears increasingly likely, as efforts to advance former U.S. President Donald Trump’s post-war peace plan falter. Six European officials told Reuters the plan’s next phase has stalled, leaving reconstruction confined to Israel-held zones, including Rafah, parts of Gaza City, and much of the territory’s farmland.

Nearly two million Palestinians remain displaced across the Hamas-held sector, living in tents amid widespread devastation. The proposed second phase—meant to establish a transitional authority and multinational force—lacks clear timelines or consensus.

Diplomats warn the so-called ‘yellow line’ may become Gaza’s de facto border unless Washington renews pressure. Many nations remain reluctant to commit troops or take on broader security responsibilities in the fractured enclave.
