The International Labour Organisation says about 840,000 people die each year globally from health conditions linked to workplace risks. The figures are contained in a new report examining the impact of modern working conditions on health.
The report identifies long working hours, job insecurity, harassment and bullying as key risk factors affecting workers’ physical and mental health. It says these conditions are increasingly contributing to diseases such as cardiovascular illness and mental health disorders, including suicide.
It notes that the way jobs are designed, organised and managed plays a major role in workers’ wellbeing. The study also links workplace risks to global health data from the World Health Organisation and other research sources.

The ILO warns that changes such as digitalisation, artificial intelligence and remote working could worsen risks if not properly managed. It calls for stronger action by governments and employers to improve workplace safety and reduce preventable deaths.
