Kenyan President Hits Back at Tinubu, Mocks Nigerians

Kenyan President William Ruto has criticised Nigeria’s economic conditions and English usage, responding to comments by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu that Nigerians are better off than citizens of some other African countries. The exchange followed remarks made during the Nigerian leader’s visit to Bayelsa State, where he inaugurated infrastructure projects and defended his administration’s policies despite mounting economic pressures.

President Tinubu had acknowledged the impact of rising fuel prices on Nigerians but urged citizens to remain optimistic, saying the country’s situation compares favourably with others on the continent. His comments were part of a broader defence of ongoing reforms aimed at stabilising the economy and addressing long-standing structural challenges.

In a widely circulated response, President Ruto rejected the comparison, highlighting Nigeria’s infrastructure difficulties, particularly persistent electricity shortages. He also took a swipe at Nigeria’s English usage, using humour to promote Kenya’s education standards and workforce as among the strongest globally.

The exchange comes against a backdrop of economic strain across Africa, driven in part by global fuel price increases and supply disruptions linked to tensions in the Middle East and the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The remarks have generated widespread debate online, with many observers questioning the tone of the discussion and calling for greater unity among African nations in addressing shared economic challenges.
