The Federal Ministry of Education has condemned the abduction of students in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State and Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State, describing the incidents as tragic and unacceptable, in a statement by Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa.
The statement, which was issued by Folasade Boriowo on Thursday, said attacks on schools and students amount to attacks on the nation’s future, and that no child should face fear or violence in pursuit of education. Alausa assured that the Federal Government is working closely with security agencies to ensure the safe return of all abducted children, and reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to improving school security.
The Minister said this would be done through enhanced surveillance systems, emergency response mechanisms and implementation of the National Policy on Safety, Security and Violence Free Schools. The ministry urged Nigerians to remain calm, avoid spreading misinformation and support ongoing rescue operations.

Mr Alausa also expressed solidarity with affected families as well as the governments of Oyo State and Borno State over the incidents. The abduction in Oyo State occurred in Oriire Local Government Area, where gunmen attacked several schools and kidnapped students, a principal and teachers. The Borno State abduction took place in Askira Uba Local Government Area, an area that has experienced significant insurgent activity in the past. Security forces have been deployed to both locations to rescue the victims.
