President Bola Tinubu has launched a new national programme called Power Force, aimed at training 5,000 young Nigerians to support the accelerated rollout of smart electricity meters across the country. The initiative is being implemented through the Presidential Metering Initiative alongside the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and forms part of the administration’s broader push to improve transparency and revenue collection in the power sector by cutting down on estimated billing.
Under the programme, training will be delivered by the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria, with certification overseen by the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency. Successful trainees will be linked up with electricity distribution companies and meter providers for employment and entrepreneurship opportunities. Phase 1 begins in Abuja this July, before expanding across Nigeria’s 6 geopolitical zones.
Officials, including the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the
Ministers of Power and Youth Development described the scheme as a way to combine job creation for young Nigerians with efforts to strengthen electricity access nationwide. Applications for the first cohort open on July 4 and remain open for 2 weeks, with details available on the Presidential Metering Initiative’s website.
