The government has strongly condemned the killing of two Nigerians in South Africa, demanding urgent investigations and prosecutions.
In a statement issued Sunday on X, Foreign Affairs spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa said Emeka Charles Iroegbu was allegedly killed by Tshwane Metro Police officers during an interrogation in Pretoria on June 28th, two days before an unofficial deadline from anti-immigration protesters for foreigners to leave the country. The same officers, the ministry says, were previously linked to the killing of another Nigerian, Nnaemeka Ekpenyong, back in April, with still no arrests made.
A second Nigerian, Musa Yunana Joe, known as “Big Joe,” was shot dead by unidentified gunmen outside his shop in Witbank the same day.
The ministry has sympathised with families of the deceased, pledging to continue diplomatic engagement with the South African government to seek justice. The ministry has also urged Nigerians still in South Africa to remain calm and security-conscious as evacuation efforts continue.
