Osibanjo appointed board president of Nigerian Conservation Foundation

Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has been named President of the Board of Trustees of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), pledging stronger climate action in his acceptance speech at the foundation’s 37th Annual General Meeting in Lagos on Wednesday.

Osinbajo paid tribute to NCF’s founders, including President Emeritus Chief Philip Asiodu and the late Chief S.L. Edu, crediting their foresight for building Nigeria’s conservation movement decades before climate change became a global concern. Asiodu, who led the board for over 20 years, stepped down from the position at age 92.

Osinbajo pointed to Nigeria’s own flooding and rising temperatures, as well as record heat of 38 to 41 degrees Celsius in parts of Europe, as evidence of accelerating climate risk, calling this “the most challenging times with respect to climate change.”

He said technology and scientific innovation offered real opportunities to address environmental challenges.

Accepting the role “with great humility,” Osinbajo pledged to deepen collaboration with NCF’s staff, volunteers and partners and build on his predecessors’ work in biodiversity conservation.
