All 44 pupils and teachers abducted from three schools in Oriire, Oyo State, have been rescued after 56 days in captivity, the Presidency announced Friday.
Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga said security agencies, including the Office of the National Security Adviser, the DSS, the Army and police, carried out the operation without any concession to the kidnappers. Eight suspected gang members were arrested and remain in DSS custody, while others were killed during the rescue. A gang leader whose release had been demanded remains in custody and is being prosecuted.
The victims were taken on May 15 when gunmen simultaneously raided Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Community Grammar School, and L.A. Primary School in Yawota and Ahoro-Esiele. One teacher was killed in the initial attack, and another died in captivity. Sources say the group was held inside Old Oyo National Park.
President Tinubu praised the operation and directed emergency agencies to provide medical care and support for the victims. Governor Seyi Makinde called the rescue “a big relief,” and confirmed six suspects were separately arrested.
