The Oyo State Government has constituted a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area. The victims were abducted from Esinele and Yawota communities on May 15 and remained in captivity for 56 days before their release.
Commissioner for Information Dotun Oyelade said the panel would investigate the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping, identify possible security lapses and make recommendations to prevent a recurrence. The commission is scheduled to be inaugurated on Friday at the Executive Council Chamber of the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.
Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier promised an independent inquiry after the victims were rescued and called for broader scrutiny of the incident.
The Presidency has previously rejected the governor’s call for a United Nations-backed investigation, saying existing Nigerian security institutions had adequately handled the case.
