Court sentences 3 Oriire kidnap masterminds to life

A Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced three men to life imprisonment Thursday over their role in the Oriire, Oyo State schoolchildren abduction, though they pleaded guilty to only six of ten charges and still face trial on the remainder.

Justice Salim Ibrahim convicted Abdulrazak Umar, Yunusa Musa, and Shamsu Adamu Sani for belonging to Darul Salam, an Ansaru affiliate, and concealing information about the kidnapping’s masterminds. Umar alone pleaded guilty to recruiting and inciting terrorism via a WhatsApp group.

The DSS says it will appeal, seeking the death penalty, citing the abductors’ beheading of two teachers during the 56-day captivity. This follows the DSS’s appeal last week of life sentences given to two senior Ansaru commanders whose release the kidnappers had demanded.
