Nigerian carriers, including Air Peace and United Nigeria Airlines, lost a combined over one billion naira on Tuesday after aviation unions grounded more than 80 flights, stranding thousands of passengers.
Three unions — NUATE, ATSSSAN and NAAPE — backed by the NLC and TUC, shut down Air Peace’s Lagos and Abuja operations over claims the airline blocked staff unionisation and withheld the five percent Ticket Sales Charge owed to the NCAA.
United Nigeria suspended flights in solidarity. The NCAA has urged unions to suspend the action for dialogue, while the Airline Operators of Nigeria says the dispute is rooted in misinformation and that carriers are already under severe financial strain.
