The Abia State Government says it will convert the newly built Government House at Ogurube Layout in Umuahia into a five-star hotel, describing the structure as unsafe and uninhabitable.
During a press tour on Wednesday, State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, said the building—commissioned by the previous administration—lacked the basic features of a functional Government House. He noted that only one floor appeared completed, while other parts remained unfinished, with no wardrobes, elevators, or proper fittings.

The Commissioner said Governor Alex Otti has approved the construction of a new, befitting Government House on the site of the former official residence. He also debunked claims that the old Government House was rented, saying it was a state-owned property, contrary to assertions made by past officials.
Kanu accused the previous administration of erecting a rushed and deceptive structure to mislead the public, calling it a “gigantic edifice that serves no real purpose.” He added that the location posed a security risk and urged Abians to continue supporting the current administration’s push for transparent governance.
