Akpabio Defends INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan Over Alleged Partisan Post

Legislature Provides Solutions Beyond Social Media, Akpabio Tells Nigerians

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has defended the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Amupitan, over allegations of partisan bias linked to a social media post. The controversy followed claims that a personal account associated with the INEC chairman endorsed a political message online.

Speaking in Abuja at the inauguration of the National Revenue Service headquarters, Senate President Godswill Akpabio dismissed the allegations, stating that the message in question was neutral and did not support any political party. He explained that the phrase suggesting victory was general and did not mention any political platform.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio also clarified that the post being referenced was made before Joash Amupitan assumed office as INEC chairman, when he was still a lecturer. He added that individuals are entitled to personal opinions before taking up public office, but must maintain neutrality while serving in official positions.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has denied the claims, describing them as false and part of a coordinated misinformation campaign. The issue is linked to a resurfaced 2023 post originally shared by Dayo Israel, which critics alleged was engaged by an account associated with Joash Amupitan.
