The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says a viral X account allegedly linked to its chairman, Joash Amupitan, is a case of digital impersonation. The commission says a forensic investigation found that the account and all posts attributed to him are fake.
In a statement issued on Monday, INEC says the probe analysed platform data, internet archives and identity forensics, and found no link between the account and the chairman. It adds that the account, created in 2022, was not connected to any verified email or personal records.
The commission says further checks revealed inconsistencies in timestamps and missing records, while the account was renamed and set to private shortly after the screenshots went viral. It also identified multiple fake social media accounts using the chairman’s identity.

INEC says the findings point to a coordinated disinformation campaign and has forwarded its report to law enforcement agencies for investigation, urging the public to avoid sharing unverified content online.
