The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally requested the deployment of over 1.4 million National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to serve as ad hoc staff for the 2027 general elections.
INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan made the disclosure on Monday during a courtesy visit to the NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, at the corps’ headquarters in Abuja, stating that the commission cannot conduct elections without the corps members.
The chairman broke down the figures, explaining that 707,384 ad hoc staff will be required for the Presidential and National Assembly election scheduled for January 16, 2027, and the same number for the Governorship and Houses of Assembly election on February 6, 2027, bringing the combined total to over 1.4 million.
