United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned what he described as an “endless catalogue of horrors” in Gaza, where the UN has declared a famine. He said the territory was “piled with rubble, piled with bodies and piled with examples of what may be serious violations of international law”. Israel’s military continues preparations to seize Gaza City despite growing international pressure to halt its campaign. Health officials say more than 62,900 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed since the war began nearly two years ago, and almost two million people have been displaced. Residents report families fleeing neighbourhoods in Gaza City after overnight bombardments, with smoke seen rising from Shujayea, Zeitoun and Sabra. Displaced people say they have no shelter and are waiting outside hospitals for safety. The head of the UN World Food Programme, Cindy McCain, has warned that desperation in Gaza is at “breaking point”. The UN says at least 317 people, including 121 children, have already died from hunger, blaming restrictions on aid deliveries.
