Colonel Mohammed Ma’aji, accused of plotting to overthrow President Tinubu’s government, says he was driven to act out of patriotism, not ambition. According to his statements obtained by Premium Times from military investigation records, Ma’aji claims Nigeria was “turning into a banana republic” and near collapse.
In new detail from his statement, Ma’aji said he personally funded much of the plan. He denied foreign involvement.
The colonel is pleading for leniency, saying the group never set a date for action and had not finished recruiting officers before his arrest. The alleged plot, uncovered in September 2025, led to a shake-up of Nigeria’s military leadership.
