Côte d’Ivoire beat Ecuador to record first African win at 2026 World Cup

Côte d’Ivoire have become the first African side to win a match at the 2026 World Cup after a 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their Group E opener in Philadelphia on Sunday.

Substitute Amad Diallo scored a late winner, striking at almost the last kick of the match to seal all three points for the Elephants. The result also ended Ecuador’s 19-match unbeaten run, which had lasted nearly two years.

In other Group E action, Germany defeated debutants Caracao 7-1, with goals from Nico Schlotterbeck, Kai Havertz, Felix Nmecha, Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown and Deniz Undav. Caracao’s Livano Comenencia scored their first-ever World Cup goal.

Elsewhere, Sweden beat Tunisia 5-1 in Group F, while Japan and the Netherlands played out a dramatic 2-2 draw.
