Nigeria’s anti-graft agency has dismissed reports suggesting it revealed details behind the detention of social media personality VeryDarkMan. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, issued a rebuttal on Monday, labelling as “fake news” a BBC Pidgin report which quoted its spokesperson, Dele Oyewale. The commission denied granting any interview on the matter.

VeryDarkMan, known for his outspoken online persona, was taken into custody on Friday after accompanying his mother to a Guaranty Trust Bank branch in Abuja over disputed withdrawals. Activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju later linked the arrest to a petition by a magistrate.
The now-rejected BBC Pidgin story had suggested the EFCC acted on multiple complaints against the commentator. The commission, however, insists it never made such disclosures, urging the public to disregard the report.
