The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission has sealed several shops in Abuja’s Utako Market for allegedly rebagging local rice and selling it as imported brands.
The FCCPC said the operation followed intelligence that traders were exploiting consumer preference for foreign rice, despite no official rice imports into Nigeria in recent years. Popular names like Royal Stallion and Mama Gold were among the brands used.

Director of Surveillance and Investigation, Boladale Adeyinka, said the practice is deceptive and violates consumer rights. She added that some of the brands have not been officially imported since 2015.
At least five shops were shut, and their owners summoned for questioning. The FCCPC says it will trace the supply chain behind the fake branding and has vowed to continue its enforcement campaign.
