FIFA is “destroying” football - La Liga president says in scathing interview

La Liga president Javier Tebas has accused FIFA of “destroying” the football industry over plans for a 64-team World Cup in 2030, telling Italy’s La Gazzetta dello Sport that FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s time is “over.”

Tebas called football’s governing structure “fundamentally flawed,” arguing domestic leagues, not the World Cup alone, sustain the sport and generate far more jobs. “They are destroying the football industry… for an event that lasts 40 days and involves only a minority of players,” he said.

Infantino first floated the 64-team expansion at June’s World Cup opening ceremony. President of the South American Football Confederation Alejandro Dominguez has since confirmed the 2030 tournament, co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, will proceed at 64 teams, though UEFA’s Aleksander Ceferin has called the proposal “a bad idea.”
