The National Association of Nigerian Students, Southwest Zone D, has threatened to shut down academic activities across tertiary institutions in Osun State, citing escalating political violence ahead of next month’s governorship election.
In a Monday statement signed by Coordinator Josiah Adeyemo, Secretary-General Babatunde Ojetola, and PRO Tope Olugbemi, NANS cited an “alarming escalation” of shootings, intimidation and politically related killings across the state, warning that nighttime gunfire near some campuses has heightened student anxiety. The association said no comprehensive security plan has been publicly communicated to protect students or their communities.
NANS also warned political parties against mobilising or transporting students for voter registration, urging students to vote based on “conscience, competence, credibility,” not intimidation or inducement.
The group stopped short of announcing an immediate shutdown, saying implementation details would follow through official NANS channels if security guarantees aren’t provided. It called on Governor Ademola Adeleke, police, DSS and NSCDC to act urgently, warning: “Our campuses will not become killing fields.”
