An early morning fire destroyed at least 17 shops at Sabo Market in Lagos State’s Ikorodu area on Tuesday, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.
The fire broke out at about 1:10 am, starting in one shop before spreading to adjoining stalls. LASEMA spokesperson Olawale Afolabi says the cause is suspected to be an electrical surge.
Emergency responders from LASEMA and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service contained the blaze before it could spread further, saving the remaining shops in the affected row. Provisions, groceries, foodstuffs and other merchandise were destroyed; no deaths or injuries were recorded.
LASEMA urged traders and residents to prioritise electrical safety, including proper wiring and avoiding overloaded appliances, and to report emergencies via the state’s toll-free lines, 112 and 767.
The incident comes just three days after a separate fire gutted the top floor of a residential building in Lagos’s Ketu-Ikosi area, in which two firefighters were briefly hospitalised.
