Flooding has hit several parts of Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, after a heavy downpour from 4 am to 10 am on Thursday. Areas including Unguwar Nungu, Millionaires Quarters and Bukan Sidi were worst affected, with overflowing gutters pulling down fences and at least one building, and forcing residents to evacuate. No deaths were reported.
Residents blame poor drainage and unfinished roads for the damage and are appealing to the state government for urgent intervention.
State Environment Commissioner Margaret Elayo, inspecting the affected areas, ordered the temporary closure of a hotel for environmental non-compliance and warned that blocked water channels, waste disposal, and construction on flood-prone land are worsening the crisis.
