Armed men have opened fire on a group of visitors near the hill resort of Pahalgam in Indian‑administered Kashmir. Police say several tourists suffered gunshot wounds in the attack, which took place at Baisaran meadow, about five kilometres from the town.
Local media report up to 20 fatalities, though police say the final death toll is still being verified. No group has claimed responsibility, but officers blame militants opposed to Indian rule. Security forces have launched a manhunt, and the injured are being treated in hospital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently in Saudi Arabia, condemned what he called a “heinous act” and vowed the gunmen would be brought to justice. Home Minister Amit Shah is flying to Srinagar to review the situation, promising “the harshest consequences” for those responsible.
Kashmir has faced tighter security since India revoked the region’s semi‑autonomous status six years ago. Attacks on tourists are rare, although nine Hindu pilgrims were killed in a similar incident last June.
