At least 11 people have been killed in Pakistan-administered Kashmir following clashes between police and supporters of the Joint Awami Action Committee, authorities said on Monday. The violence erupted on Sunday in Rawalakot, a city in the Poonch region, ahead of a planned protest scheduled for Tuesday.
Officials said four police officers and one passerby were killed after unidentified gunmen opened fire during the confrontation. In response, security forces said six protesters were killed as they moved to restore order in the area.
Police reported that at least 23 security personnel and 50 protesters were injured during the clashes. Authorities also said around 30 people had been arrested, while order was later restored after the crowd was dispersed.
The unrest followed a Supreme Court ruling in Pakistan-administered Kashmir upholding the constitutional protection of 12 legislative seats reserved for Kashmiri refugees in Pakistan. The Joint Awami Action Committee, which has been declared a proscribed group, has called for a rally on Tuesday over political representation and governance issues.
