The Lagos State House of Assembly has summoned Attorney General Lawal Pedro, SAN, and Solicitor General Oyenuga Olanrewaju over confusion surrounding the commencement date of the recently signed Local Government Administration Law 2025.
Though Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu assented to the law on May 7, a letter from the Ministry of Justice dated June 24 claimed the law would only take effect from August 4 via a ‘Commencement Order.’

The Assembly reacted sharply, insisting the law became operative upon assent. Speaker Mudashiru Obasa described the executive’s stance as puzzling and called for clarity.
Lawmakers said the law—governing succession and tenure of local council leaders—cannot be altered by executive order.
Committee chairmen Sanni Babatunde and Oladipo Ajomale warned that any attempt to override legislative authority would set a dangerous precedent.
A joint committee is now set to probe the executive’s position.
