The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, says all necessary amendments to the Electoral Act will be completed ahead of the 2027 general elections. He gave the assurance at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, while responding to questions from journalists after attending the inauguration of two new National Commissioners.
Professor Yakubu also dismissed reports suggesting he had been sacked, insisting he remains Nigeria’s Chief Electoral Officer. He said INEC has concluded its review of the 2023 general elections and identified 142 reform recommendations, with eight requiring constitutional or Electoral Act amendments.

He confirmed that INEC now has the full complement of commissioners as required by law, following the swearing-in of the new officials from the South-East and North-West zones. Yakubu noted that INEC has been working closely with the National Assembly, which will soon hold a public hearing before a final amendment bill is submitted to the President for assent.
