Political tensions continue to escalate in Mali following the military government’s controversial move to repeal a key law regulating political parties — a decision widely seen as paving the way for one-party rule.
Over the weekend, a coalition of opposition parties staged protests in Bamako, demanding a return to constitutional governance by December 31. This follows a national conference’s recent recommendation that junta leader Assimi Goita be installed as president for a renewable five-year term.

One protest leader, Cheick Oumar Doumbia, vowed to keep resisting, asserting that they are “a people committed to democracy”.
The military government had already suspended political party activity earlier in the year — now, with the latest decree, Mali’s democratic future remains in the balance.
