Mali Military Junta Suspends Political Parties

Political tensions continue to escalate in Mali following the military government’s controversial move to repeal a key law regulating political parties — a decision widely seen as paving the way for one-party rule.

Over the weekend, a coalition of opposition parties staged protests in Bamako, demanding a return to constitutional governance by December 31. This follows a national conference’s recent recommendation that junta leader Assimi Goita be installed as president for a renewable five-year term.

One protest leader, Cheick Oumar Doumbia, vowed to keep resisting, asserting that they are “a people committed to democracy”.
