The President of the African Public Interest Lawyers Union, Andrew Emwanta, has urged the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to return the ₦300 million donation from the Rivers State Government for its 2025 Annual General Conference.
Speaking in an interview monitored by Radio Now’s Newsdesk, he cited political tensions and the need to safeguard the profession’s integrity. He also criticised the association’s stance on Rivers’ emergency rule and its decision to move the conference to Enugu.

But the NBA’s Conference Planning Committee Chairman, Emeka Obegolu, says the money was an unconditional gift and not tied to the event’s location, which he claims had already been finalised before the donation.
The Rivers State Government has expressed disappointment over the NBA’s decision. In a statement, it described the association’s explanation as misleading and warned that the relocation of the event breaches their original understanding.
