NDC's only Northern senator, Rufai Hanga, resigns from party

Senator Rufai Sani Hanga, who represents Kano Central, has resigned from the Nigeria Democratic Congress, ending his membership of the opposition party.

In a resignation letter dated August 3 and addressed to his ward chairman, Hanga said he decided to leave the party after careful reflection to pursue personal commitments and career goals. He thanked the party’s leadership and members for their support and requested that his name be removed from the party register.

Hanga was the NDC’s only senator from northern Nigeria following his defection to the party earlier this year. He did not announce plans to join another political party or provide further reasons for his decision. His resignation comes as political realignments continue ahead of preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
