In commemoration of the 2025 World Day Against Child Labour, the Director-General of the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association, NECA, Mr. Adewale-Smatt Oyerinde, has called for urgent, collective action to end child labour in Nigeria and across Africa.
In a statement marking the global event—observed annually on 12 June—Mr. Oyerinde warned that despite notable progress, millions of children remain trapped in hazardous work. He urged stakeholders to move from promises to concrete action.

Citing Nigeria’s ratification of ILO Conventions 138 and 182, he identified poverty, poor law enforcement, and lack of education as key drivers.
Mr. Oyerinde described child labour as a serious threat to national development, insisting that stronger enforcement, increased investment in education, and better family support are critical.
He highlighted the ACCEL Africa Project, a partnership with the ILO, as a working model already tackling root causes in at-risk communities.
