Nigeria Fines MultiChoice N766m Over Data Privacy Breaches

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission has fined MultiChoice Nigeria N766.2 million for violating data privacy laws.

The regulator said its investigation, which began in the second quarter of 2024, uncovered multiple breaches of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, including the unlawful processing and cross-border transfer of subscribers’ personal data—as well as data belonging to individuals who were not subscribers.

The Commission described the company’s data practices as intrusive, unnecessary, and disproportionate, calling them a serious infringement of citizens’ constitutional right to privacy.

MultiChoice was ordered to take corrective action but reportedly failed to comply adequately.

The Commission has now ordered further investigations into all channels used by MultiChoice to collect Nigerians’ personal data, warning of additional sanctions for non-compliance.
