The Nigeria Police Force has unveiled a new Schools Protection Squad, SPS, to counter terrorism, banditry, and other threats to educational institutions.
The initiative was announced at a stakeholders’ forum in Lagos, where the Inspector-General of Police, represented by AIG Adegoke Fayoade, stressed the need for urgent collaboration among schools, security agencies, and local communities.
He cited global data showing over 5,000 attacks on schools between 2020 and 2022, affecting more than 22,000 individuals across 28 countries.

The SPS will deploy specially trained officers and modern technology—CCTV, perimeter fencing, and drone surveillance—to bolster safety, particularly in vulnerable areas.
Commissioners of Police have been directed to begin local engagement immediately.
Lagos State Police Commissioner CP Owohunwa Idowu described the move as timely, warning that continued insecurity threatens national development and long-term educational progress.
