Nigeria Sliding into Civilian Dictatorship, Dele Momodu Warns

Former presidential aspirant Dele Momodu has expressed concern over the state of Nigeria’s democracy, warning that the country is sliding into what he described as a “civilian dictatorship”. In an interview, Mr Momodu lamented the erosion of democratic values, saying Nigeria’s political culture has become increasingly intolerant.

Momodu accused the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, of destabilising the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and imposing his will on the party. He said Wike’s actions echo those during his time as governor of Rivers State, adding that the recent state of emergency in Rivers was triggered by Wike’s refusal to relinquish control.

Reacting to President Bola Tinubu’s comments during the reopening of the Abuja International Conference Centre, Momodu said the President’s remarks — dismissing critics as “busybodies” and “bystanders” — showed a worrying contempt for the views of ordinary Nigerians.

He added that Wike’s growing influence had created the perception of a “dual presidency” in the country.

Despite the internal crisis within the PDP, Momodu dismissed suggestions of joining the ruling All Progressives Congress.

He warned that unless Nigeria reformed its political culture and restored democratic values, it risked sinking into an era of unchecked autocracy.
