The Nigerian government has warned that it will not tolerate attacks on its citizens in South Africa as anti-migrant protests begin across the country. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs, Ademola Oshodi, called on South African authorities to protect Nigerians and enforce immigration laws through lawful institutions rather than vigilante groups.
In a statement on Tuesday, Oshodi urged South Africa to investigate reported attacks, prosecute offenders and activate the Nigeria-South Africa Early Warning Mechanism. He said no African should face violence, intimidation or discrimination because of their nationality.
The warning follows the launch of protests organised by anti-migration groups, which had set an unofficial June 30 deadline for undocumented foreigners to leave South Africa. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has appealed for peaceful demonstrations, warning that anyone involved in criminal acts will face the law.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the voluntary evacuation of Nigerians from South Africa is continuing, with two official flights and one unofficial flight already returning evacuees, while more flights are expected in the coming days.
