Nigeria’s active oil rig count climbed to 44 in July, marking a 37.5% rise since May, according to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission.
The increase was credited to reduced oil theft following both military and non-military interventions.
NUPRC Chief Executive Gbenga Komolafe, speaking at the NOG Energy Week in Abuja, said ₦326.51 billion—drawn from operators’ 3% expenditure under the Petroleum Industry Act—had been disbursed to 145 host community trusts.

He underscored efforts in digitisation, community transparency via the HostComply platform, and vowed tough action on gas flaring and regulatory defaulters.
