The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, NiHSA, has warned of a high risk of flooding across 27 states between July 30 and August 5. NiHSA Director-General Umar Ibrahim Mohammed said rising river levels have placed 53 major monitoring stations under close watch, including locations along the Katsina-Ala, Aye and Niger rivers. Niger, Kaduna, Kwara, Delta, Kogi and Edo are among the states expected to face severe flooding.
The agency warned that homes, schools, hospitals, markets, worship centres and farmlands in vulnerable areas could be affected.
Mohammed urged residents in flood-prone communities to move to higher ground where necessary and follow official advisories.
State governments, emergency agencies and community leaders were also asked to activate preparedness and evacuation plans. NiHSA says it will continue monitoring river conditions and issue further warnings.
