Nigeria’s Hydrological Services Agency has warned that 17 states face a medium flood risk between July 21 and 27, urging immediate evacuation of vulnerable communities.
Director-General Umar Mohammed said the advisory covers Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara, based on rising river levels at monitoring stations including Saminara, Waya Dam, and Amber, with 16 gauging stations nationwide showing elevated stages.
Bauchi faces the highest exposure, with 1,841 communities, 145 schools and 101 health facilities identified as vulnerable.
Mohammed urged NEMA, state emergency agencies and local governments to relocate residents and livestock immediately, pre-position relief supplies, and clear blocked drainage channels ahead of the flooding window.
