Okonjo-Iweala urges FG to deepen reforms, unlock economic opportunities

World Trade Organisation Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has urged Nigeria to sustain and deepen its economic reforms while ensuring that citizens feel their benefits through more jobs and improved living standards.

Speaking at the 7th Africa Emerging Markets Forum in Abuja, she said stronger business conditions, macroeconomic stability and investment would help Nigeria take advantage of changing global supply chains.

Okonjo-Iweala also called for careful management of public finances and debt, saying reforms must ultimately strengthen Nigeria’s competitiveness. She urged African countries to seize opportunities in green industries and critical minerals by moving beyond raw-material exports into higher-value processing.

The WTO chief also advocated open and predictable global trade, warning that fragmentation could weaken economic growth. Her comments come as the IMF says Nigeria’s recent reforms have improved macroeconomic stability, while living conditions remain difficult for many citizens.
