President Tinubu Declines Assent To NDLEA Bill

President Bola Tinubu has declined to sign the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Bill, 2025, citing contradictions with existing financial regulations. The bill had proposed allowing the NDLEA to retain part of the proceeds from drug-related crimes.

In a letter read by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, the president said all such proceeds must be paid into the government’s Confiscated and Forfeited Properties Account. He emphasised that any disbursement to recovery agencies must follow due process, including presidential approval and oversight by the Federal Executive Council and National Assembly.

The rejection marks the second time this week President Tinubu has withheld assent to a proposed law. On Tuesday, he turned down the National Assembly Library Trust Fund Amendment Bill, citing legal and policy inconsistencies, particularly around taxation and agency funding structures.

Despite the vetoes, President Tinubu is expected to sign four major tax reform bills into law. The bills aim to overhaul Nigeria’s fiscal and revenue systems and were passed by the National Assembly after wide-ranging consultations with stakeholders.
